Our acting Head Teacher, Mrs Morgan, has asked us to share some of the main points of the National Improvement Framework (NIF) with you.

The NIF comes from the Scottish Government and builds on the frameworks that are already firmly established in Scottish schools, Curriculum for Excellence and GIRFEC. The vision of the NIF is Excellence through raising attainment: ensuring that every child achieves the highest standards in literacy and numeracy and the right range of skills, qualifications and achievements to allow them to succeed; and Achieving equity: ensuring every child has the same opportunity to succeed. The Scottish Attainment Challenge will help to focus our efforts and deliver this ambition.

Gathering evidence is a key part of the NIF. There are six key drivers of improvement: school leadership, teacher professionalism, parental engagement, assessment of children’s progress, school improvement and performance information.

These six key drivers for improvement will be instrumental in achieving the key priorities which are:

• Improvement in attainment, particularly in literacy and numeracy;
• Closing the attainment gap between the most and least disadvantaged children;
• Improvement in children and young people’s health and wellbeing; and
• Improvement in employability skills and sustained, positive school leaver destinations for all young people;

P7 Code Club is coming soon to South Morningside Primary! Parents of current P7 pupils only have until Wednesday 23 March to note their interest for an expected summer term start.

If you’d like to get your child on the list please email code-club@sm-pc.org with your child’s name and class. If the club is over-subscribed, selection will be made via a ballot.

Code club is on the lookout for more parent volunteers to help run the club and is also looking for donations of old flat screen monitors, keyboards and mice. If you can help, please email code-club@sm-pc.org.

Boroughmuir High School Parent Council Secretary

Boroughmuir PC are looking for somebody who is willing to take on the vital role of Secretary to support the work of the Office bearers of the Parent Council (PC) @ BHS.

This role has a fee attached to it, from the City of Edinburgh, and we can offer the right person £35 per PC meeting, of which there are six per academic year plus the AGM, for taking the minutes and dealing with all of the administration of papers connected to each meeting.

BHS hope to appoint the right person as soon as possible, and you would be welcome to come along to their next PC meeting on Wednesday 16th March between 6.30 and 8.00 to meet us, then you would be most welcome.

The Role:

SECRETARY
• To support the Chair in administrative matters, formulating and distributing information
• To collect and distribute relevant documents in preparation for Parent Council meetings (7 meeting p.a.)
• To take, circulate and update minutes of PC meetings
• To maintain a current PC members distribution list
• To liaise with the Web Masters who maintain the PC Website

The construction work on the new Boroughmuir school building will finish five weeks later than planned and will now not be completed until 28 October 2016.  This means there will be no move into the new building after the October break as had been planned and, as it is our intention to move over a school holiday period to minimise disruption to pupils, this means the opening of the new school will now be at the start of the new school term in January 2017.

The Scottish Government are consulting children and young people and their parents as part of the process of updating the National Approach to bullying. Below is a link to a short questionnaire with a view to gathering the views of parents on anti-bullying. Please note the closing date is Friday 19 February.

This isn’t specifically related to any school matters, but we thought it might be of general interest to the parent community.

The council are consulting about the possible redevelopment of several sites in the Morningside/Bruntsfield area, one of which is the Deanbank/Oakland Care Home area.

There are some vacancies in the parent community that we are looking to fill – you don’t need to be a parent council member or have prior experience. What we’re looking for is enthusiasm!
