Recorder club provides an ideal opportunity for learning an instrument that provides a great starting point for understanding music.  Lessons are in very small groups, normally not more than 6 pupils, and are taught by Sara Ferrington, an experienced recorder teacher.  She provides an encouraging and supportive atmosphere, and adjusts classes to suit the speed of different pupils’ learning.

Who, When & Where:

Classes run for 20-30 minutes each, on Tuesdays, at Morningside Parish Church from 3.40 – 6.00pm; aimed at P4-7, there are up 6 pupils per class, with class sizes and times adjusted to take account of recorder experience and ability.

Club Convenor: Francesca Richards

Tutor Name:  Sara Ferrington

Allocation of spaces: Existing pupils are given priority, to enable them to build on their existing experience.  There is also a class for beginners each August, with around 6 places allocated to new comers.  There may be scope to increase this, but this is dependent on the number of existing pupils returning to the club.

Class times can vary from term to term, as children drop out or to ensure classes take account of different abilities.  The teacher sets times and allocates pupils at the beginning of each term; though these are often similar from one term to the next, this is not guaranteed.

Club Convenor’s children are always given a priority place in the club. Please contact the Club Convenor should you wish to take advantage of this privilege by offering to take on this position in future.

Cost: Cost is approximately £6.50 per lesson, and is paid on a termly basis.  The exact cost will be confirmed at the start of each term.  Children are asked to bring their own recorder but advice is given on what/ where to buy.  Music must be bought through the teacher.

A child’s space is not guaranteed until payment is received. All payment is due PRIOR to clubs starting. Failure to do so could result in your child not being admitted in to the club.

Cheques are to be written to SMPC, envelopes marked ‘Recorder Club’ & posted in the Clubs Box by the Janitor’s Office (Main School) or by Reception (Deanbank).

Parent Volunteers required: NO

Refunds: Very occasionally classes need to be cancelled (e.g. instructor sickness). SMPC policy is that refunds will only be given in exceptional circumstances at the individual club’s discretion as offering refunds when this happens involves a lot of work for relatively small amounts of money. If, after accepting & paying for a place, your child subsequently does not take the place / drops out / changes their mind, a refund will not be given

SMPC Code of Conduct

Parents are kindly reminded that SMPC Clubs only operate thanks to a school parent who volunteers to act as Club Convenor & run the administrative side of the club. Parents are requested to respect the efforts of each Club Convenor.
